Letter of Reference Expectations
Please ask the individual providing you with the letter of reference to answer these three questions:
1. Their relationship to the applicant
(e.g., supervisor, department head, etc.)
2. The applicant’s current role and responsibilities
Include a brief overview of the candidate’s position and
how it relates to the focus of the certificate program.
3. Why they support the applicant’s participation in the
program
What qualities, experiences, or growth potential make this
individual a good fit?
4. How the applicant demonstrates leadership, initiative,
or commitment to professional growth
Share examples, if possible.
5. How this program supports the applicant’s professional
development
Describe how the skills, knowledge, or experience gained
will contribute to their career path or development plan.
6. A statement of endorsement
Confirming that the leader supports the applicant’s
participation and time commitment to the program
